Beco filed a voluntary recall yesterday with US Consumer Product Safety Commission for their product Beco Butterfly produced and sold during January thru February 2008. Same recall for EU will be filed next week.
Hazard: Buckles connecting top of carrier’s body with shoulder straps can suddenly release tension when shoulder straps held near by or by the buckles, causing carrier’s body to shift, posing a fall hazard to the baby.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 10 reports of the webbing slipping thru the shoulder buckles causing carrier’s body to shift. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The recalled infant carriers were sold under brand name “Beco Baby Carrier Butterfly”. Carrier has black label with green logo “b” on left side and picture of butterfly on the right side.
Name of fabrics included in this recall: Mia, Pony Express, Carnival, Addison, Ethan, Sophia, Cameron, Ava, Joshua
Remedy: Consumers should stop using the carrier immediately and contact Beco Baby Carrier for instructions on returning the carriers for repair. Firm will provide free retrofit of the buckles and reimburse involved postage.
Beco is saying the information will be posted on their website by today and a hotline (800 number) by next week.
We wanted to get this information out as soon as we had word from it from the vendor.
Bottom line; “we recognized the potential hazard resulting from use of our product, will contact all customers who has purchased this product (via email and mail) and offer a free retrofit of the pieces with the new types of buckles, which will be standard use in our production as of March.
We will also reimburse customers for returning shipping and ship the products back for free as well”.
All Beco Butterfly carriers made after the recall are already retrofitted with they new parts. As of now, our inventory is being sent back to Beco, and we will receive the new shipment in April. We will be testing them under our conditions to make sure they are safe for our customers and then will decide if it’s a product we still wish to carry. This is a voluntary recall and no accidents have been reported. We loved this carrier for its innovative design and style. Let’s hope they can get it together and get the product back on track.
I’ll keep you posted with any further information. We are asking our customers to call Beco at 714-552-3201, or you can wait for their toll free number which will be out next week. We will not be able to accept returns here, Beco wants to have all of their products returned to them to fix the issue. However, if you have any questions about the carrier you have or if you should be using it, please call us at 401-234-1279.
Best, Shannon
